Momentum doesn’t start until action does

You’re not stuck in your search.

You’re busy avoiding it.

There’s a version of job search activity that feels productive but creates zero forward movement. I see it constantly — especially in senior leaders who are disciplined, high-achieving people in every other area of their lives. It looks like this:

Avoiding in a senior search looks like: → Perfecting your resume instead of sending it → Researching a company for two hours instead of reaching out to someone who works there → Updating your LinkedIn headline for the fourth time instead of posting anything → Waiting until you feel “ready” to network instead of having one imperfect conversation today.

It all feels like preparation. It’s actually protection.

Protection from the vulnerability of putting yourself out there at a level where you have something real to lose. Because the higher you’ve climbed, the more exposure a search can feel like.

I understand that. But here’s what I know after 20+ years of watching people navigate this:

The search doesn’t move until you do something uncomfortable.

Not perfectly. Not with the ideal message or the perfectly timed ask. Just something that requires a little courage and actually involves another human being.

If you’re ready to create real traction: → Close the job boards after 30 minutes. Then make one call. → Send the message to the contact you’ve been overthinking for a week. → Follow up on the conversation you’re afraid of seeming too eager about. → Say out loud — to someone — what you’re actually looking for.

Preparation has a ceiling. Momentum doesn’t start until action does.
